FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 17, 2026) – Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center is pleased to present From Brayer to Brush: Relief Prints By Jim Sherraden. The exhibit will feature the colorful wood and paper quilts that Sherraden has created since his days working at Nashville’s iconic Hatch Show Print. The exhibit, which runs Feb. 21 to April 5, 2026, will also include some of the relief prints that Sherraden created with musician and artist Jon Langford.
“We are honored to showcase the relief prints of Jim Sherraden in our Papillon Gallery,” says Cheryl Strichik, the MACC’s executive director. “Like the great French master Toulouse-Lautrec, whose work is also on display at Monthaven, Jim has elevated the poster into an art form of the first rank. Beauty and exquisite detail are evident in all of Jim’s prints.”
Since 1984, Sherraden’s name has been synonymous with Hatch Show Print, the iconic letterpress poster and design shop in Nashville, Tennessee. Over the course of his 34-year tenure at Hatch Show Print, Sherraden oversaw the shop’s transition from a technological curiosity to world-renowned icon of American culture and design.
Sherraden’s exhibition in the MACC’s Papillon Gallery will feature a collection of his original prints. These works were printed from the artist’s custom-carved woodblocks and are assembled in a fashion that often resemble homespun quilts or exotic Persian carpets. Many of the patterns resemble designs found in nature, like the symmetry of peacock feathers or a spiderweb.
The exhibit will also include a few works that Sherraden created with the artist and musician Jon Langford. A founding member of the legendary rock band the Mekons, Langford is also a painter and graphic designer known for creating images of such music icons as Hank Williams and Johnny Cash. His collaborations feature his stylistic portraits decorated with Sherraden’s abstract design.
Sherraden will give an artist talk at Monthaven from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7, 2026. An opening reception for his Papillon Gallery exhibit will follow his talk from 6 to 8 p.m.
