Nashville Opera is opening its 45th season with a production of The Shining, a contemporary opera based on Stephen King’s delightfully creepy 1977 novel. John Hoomes, Nashville Opera’s long-time artistic director, joins MACC Talk host John Pitcher to discuss the qualities that make The Shining a perfect subject for opera. They also talk about the rest of the 45th season, which includes operas by Puccini and Rossini. The episode is sponsored by the Carolyn Smith Foundation.
Nashville Opera’s 2025-26 includes the following:
The Shining
Oct. 9 and 11 at TPAC Jackson Hall
The Girl of the Gold West
Jan. 22 and 24 at The Fisher Center for the Performing Arts
The Barber of Seville
April 16 and 18 at TPAC Jackson Hall

Who knew Stephen Kings *delightfully creepy* novel would make such a perfect subject for opera? Its fascinating to hear John Hoomes talk about why *The Shining* is the perfect choice for Nashville Operas 45th season opener! I mean, bringing Kings creepy world to life with music – now thats an adventure! Cant wait to see if the opera turns the Overlook Hotel into a must-see cultural destination or just a really long ride. And speaking of long rides, I hope the upcoming *Barber of Seville* isnt as hair-raising as the *Shining*! Overall, sounds like a season full of musical peaks and maybe a few operatic screams – very exciting!
