HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 25, 2025) – The extraordinary works of the 20th century’s most influential artist will be on display at Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center starting in September. The Unknown Picasso: Selections from the Marina Picasso Estate Collection (Sept. 6 through Nov. 9, 2025) features 70 limited edition lithographs authenticated and hand-signed by Marina Picasso, Picasso’s eldest granddaughter.
“Monthaven is honored to showcase these extraordinary artworks in Tennessee for the very first time,” says Cheryl Strichik, the MACC’s executive director. “This incredible collection touches upon each decade of Picasso’s unprecedented 70-year career. The exhibit showcases everything from realism and cubism to the voluminous portraits that the great artist created of his friends and lovers. Our visitors will be amazed.”
As the daughter of Picasso’s oldest son, Paul, Marina was acknowledged as one of the artist’s legitimate heirs when he passed away in 1973. Following a contentious, multi-million-dollar legal battle among the claimants to Picasso’s vast estate, Marina inherited some 10,000 works of art, which also included some of the artist’s finest ceramic pieces, along with sculptures, drawings and etchings.
The Unknown Picasso exhibition features limited edition lithographs made from the never-before-seen works in Marina’s collection. The Marina lithographs, issued in editions of 500, were made under the guidance of master lithographer and chromist Marcel Salinas. Marina selected Salinas as the ideal artist and printmaker to faithfully translate her grandfather’s original works of art into fine lithographs. Each one was created and reproduced from hand-drawn lithographic plates, an extremely labor-intensive process.
As part of the forthcoming exhibition, renowned art historian Charles A. Riley, II, PhD, will offer his unique insights about the legendary Spanish artist. Dr. Riley has authored four acclaimed books about the artist and curated more than a dozen exhibitions featuring Picasso’s work.
Riley’s visit will feature two special event options, both presented by Park West Foundation. On Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025, Riley will speak at a buffet dinner. Tickets for the dinner, which runs from 6 to 9 p.m., are $100. An open bar is included. Riley will also speak at a brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14, 2025. The brunch will feature mimosas and more. Tickets for the brunch are $75. Seating is limited. For tickets, visit monthavenarts.org/events or call (615) 822-0789.
