FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. (May. 27, 2025) – Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center will showcase the works of two prominent contemporary artists this summer. The exhibition, titled Canvas + Stone, will feature more than 65 works by the painter Kathryn Dettwiller and sculptor Somers Randolph. The exhibit runs June 21 to July 27, 2025 at the MACC.

“Kathryn Dettwiller and Somers Randolph create art in entirely different mediums,” says Cheryl Strichik, the MACC’s executive director. “Yet these two artists, working more than a thousand miles apart, seem to share a common artistic language. They both create abstract works filled with fluid shapes and muted colors. I think our visitors will find much to admire in the beauty, immediacy and accessibility of these wonderful works.”

Dettwiller’s paintings are well-known to Tennessee art enthusiasts. Her works have been on display at the Parthenon Museum, Frist Art Museum, Tennessee State Museum and Tinney Contemporary, among other places. A graduate of Vanderbilt University, Dettwiller creates paintings that are awash in various shades of blue, green, white and yellow. She has a penchant for malleable media, working in oils, waxes, encaustic and traditional drawing media in her Nashville, Tennessee studio.

Somers Randolph has been actively pursuing form for most of his life. Based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Randolph creates his one-of-a-kind sculptures in stone from every continent. Marble, granite, alabaster, onyx, and even lapis, have yielded unique shapes, with personalities that shift and change as they interact with light. Light bounces off the surface of an opaque sculpture, highlighting and drawing out hidden details, but penetrates deeply into translucent material, making the work glow and come alive.

Though now living in Santa Fe, Randolph had been a long-time Nashville art scene denizen. He was drawn to Tennessee after spending many summers in the city with extended family members as an adolescent. He later returned to pursue his art career for about seven years. His participation in Canvas + Stone, therefore, will be something of an artistic homecoming.

The opening reception for Canvas + Stone will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2025. The artists will be on hand to greet visitors and discuss their creations.

Kaylin Warden

Creative Design and Operations Manager

Kaylin Warden serves as the MACC’s Creative Design and Operations Manager. In this post, she oversees the organization’s graphic design work for exhibitions, events and special projects. She also coordinates the MACC’s arts outreach activities and assists with bookkeeping, among other duties. Kaylin, above all, is passionate about the arts. It comes as no surprise, then, that she is now pursuing a master’s degree in art history. When she’s not at the MACC, you can find her reading her favorite books (especially ones dealing with maritime mysteries), cooking, gardening, playing with her cat and two dogs, and cheering for the Nashville Predators.
