Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center is joining forces with the Charlie Daniels Journey Home Project to present Quilts of Valor. The exhibition, on display Jan. 22 to Mar. 16 at the Charlie and Hazel Daniels Veterans and Military Families Center at MTSU, will also feature works by artist and Vietnam veteran Eddie Nelson. An opening reception is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Feb. 3. The exhibition and reception are both free.
The 10 quilts in this exhibition are from the Quilt of Valor Foundation. Founded on the inspiration of a dream, the organization operates through a network of volunteers who create and distribute quilts to recipients. The large quilts, measuring on average 60-inches-by-80-inches, are awarded to any service member or veteran who has been touched by war. The quilt says unequivocally, “Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation.”
Eddie Nelson is a proud Vietnam veteran and long-time resident of the Sumner County Veterans Residence in Gallatin, Tennessee. Following his deployment, Nelson struggled, like many of his peers, to find his place in a world that had moved on. Through trial and error, he discovered that art and music offered a way to process his memories and emotions. His drawings often reflect both the chaos of battle and the serenity of peace, blending bold strokes with moments of quiet detail. He will exhibit 10 of his original works at MTSU.
The Charlie and Hazel Daniels Veterans and Military Families Center is located inside Middle Tennessee State University’s Keathley University Center, 1524 Military Memorial, Murfreesboro, TN 37130. The Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
